- ‘The bracken made their bed’: They used bracken as bedding
- ‘Tom’s hand was strong to the plough’ He was strong enough to push the plough
- ‘But all the beautiful crops soon went / to the mortgage man instead’ They must of got a mortgage to buy the farm and had to pay it back with their crops
- ‘Old Tom’s gone light in the head’ Because he was getting old and because Elizabeth died he went a bit crazy
- ‘The farm’s still there. Mortgage corporations / couldn’t give it away’ The farm was so old and wrecked the bank couldn’t sell it because of its disastrous state
Why do you think this changed in the last stanza? Because it was the end of the poem so it ended differently
Do you think this is a sad or happy poem? Why? Sad, because Tom and Elizabeth wanted a nice life but couldn’t make one because they owed the bank money and other bad things happened
